Our generation is considered to be genius when it comes to technology, and I believe it's because we've been exposed to it from a young age. From playing games on our computer, tamagotchi, Nintendo, play station and so forth, it's only normal that people assume that we are experts. Let's take the compliment!
Although this is true, it's important we don't forget that traditional marketing is still important and relevant, so don't write it off just yet. It's a great advantage that we're knowledgable about the importance of digital marketing, what a great IMC campaign can do for a business and all. However, we need to also take into consideration the company we're joining. What is the company's marketing strategy? Are they for traditional or digital marketing? Should we try and improve this or leave it alone? I believe this is one of the many mistakes that new marketers make.
Once we graduate, we'll step into the real world, start looking for internships and if we're lucky we become juniors at a company. Graduates make a few mistakes, here are a few.
Whilst on a hunt for a job keep these few tips recommended in mind:
Don't be narrow minded when you're searching for a job
There's many opportunities which may not necessarily be on JobSeek. Don't rely on jobs advertised online
Don't focus on the employer
Don't worry about the pay
Once you've landed the job, how can you give it your 100%?
Don't think you're above grunt work
Avoid being passive
You need to keep on learning, even if it's something you think you already know
Don't worry about your popularity
The first year for any marketer is the hardest year ever. Even though you're coming with knowledge that you've learnt from your uni, research and different resources, being in the industry is a whole different thing. You have to listen carefully to instruction, ask questions, observe and continue to expand your knowledge and skills. Most importantly, stay humble!
With all these tips recommended by experienced marketers, do you think they're realistic or difficult to follow? Are you currently working for a marketing company whether it's an internship or not, if so, how is it like? Did you find these tips accurate?
@hluuu
Absolutely, it's fun and exciting to be able to join the industry and learn from businesses who've been in marketing for a while. We definitely need to think outside the box and try to do our best to impress them.
@rebecca_allaoui
That's exactly right! We have to stay open minded and adapt to our workplace. it's good if we can implement and give our ideas, but we can't disregard the basics of marketings
Hey Vanessa, great tips and advice! I agree with you on not to be narrow-minded as us as marketers all have to think outside the box to stand out and to never stop learning. I did an internship with a marketing manager of a restaurant franchise however, because of COVID-19 I had to withdraw from it. I did learn a few things and it was definitely fun.
It is so crucial that in this digital age, we do not completely disregard the foundation of what our industry was built upon. Despite digital marketing is so prevalent in today's day, we can not simply forget just how useful and important traditional marketing is. It is very important for marketers to adapt to their workplaces as every business will have to market differently depending on the product and the audience, as well as what is relevant at the time. I think this is one of the most crucial elements of being a marketer.
@toddhamilton5
I agree with you 100%. Everyone starts from the bottom before they reach the top and there's nothing wrong with aiming high, but you gotta take a step at a time. So being humble is very important to succeed in a new working environment.
